It is April 2025, and construction has begun on the new Austin Convention Center.
The whole world is anxiously waiting for it to open in 2028. That’s because the new facility, which promises to be the crowning jewel of the city’s downtown transformation:
- It will nearly double from 365,000 square feet to 620,000 square feet of rentable space.
- Will be a comfortable fit for larger groups that it could not accommodate in the original center
- It will boast innovative architecture, sustainable practices, public art, and more.
- A $1.6 billion project will be funded through hotel occupancy tax and convention center revenues.
But, what will underscore it as a significant, forward-moving facility is the fact that it will be the world’s first convention center to be zero-carbon certified (International Living Futures
Institute).
Regarding the fantastic undertaking, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson commented: “The redevelopment of the convention center will create a vital downtown amenity and urban connector. With a design that emphasizes street-level openness and accessibility, vibrant public plazas, and pedestrian-friendly pathways, this transformation will enhance connectivity and inclusivity, creating a more accessible and engaging downtown experience for residents and visitors.”
Likewise, Trisha Tatro, director of the Austin Convention Center Department, also emphasized that the center will be more than just a venue—”it’s a landmark that reflects our city’s bold and creative spirit,” she stated. “With its dynamic design, enhanced community access, and commitment to sustainability, this facility will set a new benchmark for convention spaces while strengthening Austin’s reputation as a premier global destination.” According to the latest communication, the overall design will also reimagine traditional event spaces, prioritizing accessibility, flexibility, and sustainability. Key architectural highlights include expansive outdoor features such as open-air terraces, public plazas,
seamless indoor-outdoor connections, a modern facade, sweeping roof structures, and transparent designs to maximize natural light. Furthermore, the overall design ensures a dynamic experience for event attendees while
enhancing connectivity with surrounding districts, including the Waterloo Greenway, Palm District, Project Connect initiatives, and more. The super-star center will be a complete Cultural hub showcasing dynamic installations, interactive exhibits, and artist-driven spaces celebrating Austin’s diverse creative community.
To meet the anticipated demand, Unconventional ATX, as the project is called, will also prioritize public access and multimodal transit by reopening Third Street for multimodal traffic and will transform Second Street into a pedestrian-friendly corridor.
Note that the current facility closed last (April 2025), with demolition and construction beginning shortly thereafter. Once completed, the expanded center will allow Austin to compete internationally while creating a space that serves visitors and locals alike.
“Visit Austin is thrilled the renderings of Austin’s reimagined Convention Center have been unveiled,” said Tom Noonan, President & CEO of Visit Austin. “This project represents a pivotal investment in Austin’s future as a top-tier convention and tourism destination, and we look forward to welcoming the world to experience everything our incredible city offers.” Expected Completion: Late 2028, reopening in time for the 2029 Spring Festival season.
