Portland, Oregon Meeting Space – And Then Some!

What I’ve noticed about some meeting and event planners is that they sometimes tend to stick to what’s familiar, what’s convenient, or what’s already been a proven success with their attendees. Why not? It’s the easy thing to do, and it’s always beneficial to build business relationships for better deals and excellent service. After all, last year’s annual meeting at that fabulous resort just an hour away from the home office was so spectacular and easy to get to, why not do it again? Okay, good idea, but sometimes you’ve just got to branch out and surprise everyone with something new – a destination that will shake things up from the usual routine of things. Portland, Oregon, for instance. That should do it.

Located at the far northwest tip of the U.S., just south of the State of Washington, Portland might have had a rough-and-tumble past, historically speaking. Still, it has emerged as a premier travel destination for all types of travelers. In fact, according to Travel Portland (TP), a promoter and steward of an evolving city, a visit here is downright transformational. “Ever envision a convention where attendees could seamlessly transition from attending cutting-edge sessions to exploring urban trails with a majestic volcano as a backdrop?” they ask. “Or perhaps cap off a day of networking with award-winning cuisine, all while knowing (your) event is contributing to a city renowned for its sustainability?”

Today, there’s just so much to say about this memorable urban destination with a flair for the unusual and transformative. Already successful with small groups, its mission is now to reach out to larger groups as well. And, it’s been making great strides at this so far. “Think a revitalized, eco-conscious airport, innovative cultural hubs, and a convention center committed to green practices,” a TP announcement says. “Meeting and convention planners are increasingly prioritizing destinations that offer more than just event space; they’re seeking immersive experiences that resonate with attendees long after the closing session. Portland, with its breathtaking natural surroundings, thriving culinary and arts scenes, and commitment to sustainability, delivers exactly that. Its compact, tax-free environment also makes it an accessible and budget-friendly choice for impactful events.”

Portland is also at the forefront of addressing critical issues of the day and within the industry. It consistently ranks among the greenest cities in the U.S., as reflected by the OCC – the Oregon Convention Center. It holds LEED Platinum certification and boasts one of the largest solar panel arrays of any such facility in the nation. The center also features more than 478,000 square feet of flexible meeting and event space, including 255,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space, 52 meeting rooms, and two ballrooms.

Furthermore, the Hyatt Regency Portland is conveniently connected to the convention center, with other premier meeting hotels, such as the Hilton Downtown Portland and the Marriott Downtown Waterfront, located nearby. And, not to be overlooked, there are two popular historic hotels, such as The Nines and The Benson, which offer a change of pace and feature their own unique event spaces as well
