Installation will Generate Enough Electricity in its First Year to Power More than 1,000 Homes
(Albany, N.Y. – In recognition of Earth Day, Albany County Executive Daniel McCoy celebrated the completion of a 1.06-megawatt solar array on the roof of the MVP Arena Parking Garage with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The solar installation will generate an estimated 1,157,693 kilowatt-hours of electricity in its first year – enough to charge more than 500,000 smartphones, power more than 1,000 homes, or fully charge a standard electric car 17,000 times. The project will lead to savings of more than $154,000 annually for Albany County.
“This project delivers on our commitment to renewable energy while generating substantial savings for county residents,” said County Executive McCoy. “The MVP Arena solar installation sets a powerful example for other public facilities across the region and demonstrates how we can achieve both sustainability and cost-efficiency.”
The project represents one of the largest solar installations at a sports and entertainment facility in the Capital Region and aligns with New York State’s clean energy goals.

The next phase of the sustainability initiative will be completed by the end of April, featuring 52 new level 2 electric vehicle charging stations in the garage. The EV charging infrastructure will include 32 charging stations for the County fleet on the bottom floor and four public charging stations per floor. Infrastructure is also in place to support a total of eight charging stations per floor in the future.
The combined solar and EV charging initiatives position MVP Arena as a leader in sustainable venue operations and support New York State’s clean energy goals.
