ALBANY, NY — The Prime Site Award-winning Times Union Center’s event calendar has been packed in recent months, particularly March 2019. Over the course of 34 events days in the first quarter, the arena hosted 42 events. March was exceptionally busy, with 22 individual events including seven concerts, 23 basketball games and three family shows. Sold-out concerts in March included Elton John, Mumford & Sons, Ariana Grande, Fleetwood Mac and Blake Shelton. Major basketball games included NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Regional as well as the 2019 MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship (returning for the fifth year in a row). Sesame Street Live! was a highlight among the family shows. Ticket sales from January to March grossed $9,728,446, much of which can be attributed to the five sold-out concerts.
“Thanks to the outstanding number of events that the Times Union Center has hosted so far this year, 250,000 patrons have made their way into Downtown Albany,” said County Executive Daniel P. McCoy. “They’ve seen the wonderful investment we have made in the facility, which has enhanced the experience of our visitors. We are part of a truly special community that warmly welcomes visitors to our exciting city. I look forward to many more months like these at the Times Union Center.”
In order to accommodate all events from January to March, staff logged 74,000 man-hours, 34,500 of which were in March alone. The arena was changed over 30 times, and over 9,000 chairs were set on the floor for six of the seven March concerts.
“We’re incredibly proud of the tone we’ve set for 2019,” commented Bob Belber, General Manager of the Times Union Center. “Producing 34 events, each with their own unique floor plan and set of needs, is no easy feat. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our wonderful sponsors and dedicated staff. It was truly impressive to see everyone in the building come together in order to ensure the success of each and every event.”
