Alan Steel will serve through March 2025; the Replacement search commences.

New York, NY, June 26, 2024…. The New York Convention Center Operating Corporation (NYCCOC) has
announced that Alan Steel will retire at the end of March 2025. Steel, who has led the Javits Center since his
appointment as President and CEO in 2012 leaves behind a legacy of innovation, resilience, and sustainable
growth.
Steel’s journey with the Javits Center spans an impressive 38 years, with 12 years at the helm preceded by 26
years as a customer. His tenure witnessed significant challenges and triumphs, from navigating the aftermath
of Hurricane Sandy and the COVID pandemic to overseeing the completion of the building’s $375 million
renovation and $1.35 billion expansion. Under his leadership, the Javits Center evolved into more than just a
convention center; it symbolized sustainability, community partnership, and economic vitality.
“Alan Steel’s selfless leadership guided the Javits Center through a transformative era, from its physical
renaissance to navigating the challenges of the pandemic, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come,”
stated Javits Board Chair Lee Perlman.
During his tenure, Steel also modernized information technology infrastructure, championed sustainability
initiatives, and played a pivotal role in the development of the event industry’s Net Zero Carbon Events
Pledge. His visionary leadership has positioned the Javits Center as a national leader in sustainability,
security, and technology.
“When I came to the building, I had the benefit of being a previous customer and was able to focus on
customer experience and culture change as priorities,” said Steel. “I planned to be here for only 3 or 4 years,
but change takes time, and other issues and opportunities have emerged. I have been truly fortunate to have the
support of the Governor, the NYCCOC Board, and a strong leadership team to bring about meaningful
change. “
The retirement of Alan Steel marks the end of an era at the Javits Center. To ensure a seamless transition in
leadership, Hugh Carey, Vice Chair of the Board, will lead a national search for Steel’s replacement. The
transition process will begin in June, allowing ample time to identify and appoint a successor who will
continue the Javits Center’s legacy of excellence.
As the Javits Center looks toward the future, it remains dedicated to its mission of hosting world-class
events, fostering innovation and driving economic growth in the region. After completing its historic
expansion project, the Javits Center attracts new generations of visitors and solidifies its position as a
premier destination on Manhattan’s West Side.
