AUSTIN, TX – Fairmont Austin, the 37-story luxury hotel opening Summer 2017, is pleased to announce the appointment of Shawna Gemmell to the position of Director, Human Resources.
Shawna will direct the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources Department and will be a strategic member of the Executive Committee for the newest and largest Fairmont hotel in the United States. She brings over 22 years of Fairmont experience to the position. Shawna began her career at Fairmont Banff Springs, where she held the titles of Benefits Administrator and Human Resources Supervisor. She went on to hold various positions at Fairmont hotels in Canada, the U.S., and the United Arab Emirates including Assistant Director and Director, Human Resources. Most recently, she was promoted to Regional Director, Human Resources, where she oversaw The Plaza, New York, Fairmont Washington, D.C., and Fairmont Pittsburgh.
Shawna holds a certificate in Human Resources Management from the University of Calgary and a Tourism & Transportation Diploma from Sir Sandford Fleming College.
Additionally, Fairmont Austin has named Fernando Teixeira, to the position of Director, Conference Services and Catering. Fernando began his career as a Catering Manager at Le Royale Meridien King Edward in Toronto before being promoted to Director of Catering. He then held progressive position including Conference Services and Catering Manager at Sheraton Centre Hotel and Director, Conference Services and Catering at Fairmont Royal York, both in Toronto. While in Canada, he managed the largest banquet operation within Fairmont’s Canadian hotels and oversaw the coordination of the G20 Summit that hosted 34 of the country’s leaders as well as Financial Ministers. In 2011, Fernando relocated to Fairmont Scottsdale Princess as Director, Conference Services and Catering where he was responsible for the largest banquet operation in the global Fairmont collection.
Fernando earned the Certified Meeting Planner (CMP) certification in 2003, a credential globally recognized as the badge of excellence in the meeting, convention, exhibition and event industry.
Also, Matthew Day has joined the Fairmont Austin as Group Sales Manager. Matthew began his hospitality career at Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui where he held various positions including Front Desk Agent, Leisure Sales Manager and Group Sales Manager. While in Maui, he was honored as Fairmont Colleague of the Year in 2007. Matthew holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from the University of Kansas.
